How industrial architecture is presented in the residential field

21 December 2022

Usually, the industrial buildings are not thought to surprise on the design side, but in this case, the focus is on functionality. This fact seems, however, to be slowly changing in our country as well, where we see increasingly complex industrial spaces designed and built, especially in new cases and contexts, in which they have not been seen before.

The interest in the industrial architecture emerged only at the beginning the 20th century, when more emphasis began to be placed on this branch. Given the fact that factory processes gradually became automated, architectural changes also became necessary, with buildings beginning to be designed in such a way as to accommodate the new production processes with the necessary machinery inside.
Another novelty in industrial architecture is the concern for the environment. In the idea that this is one of the main areas responsible for pollution, we try to design and make buildings as efficient as possible. Companies like PRODESIGN ENGINEERING & CONSTRUCTION try to go for the most sustainable options and think every step in this direction.

As we move forward, industrial architecture makes its presence felt more and more also in the residential buildings, more and more people are attracted and want houses built or furnished in this style, being characterized by the following aspects:

  • structural elements exposed, integrated into the décor of the home;
  • the use of natural materials such as wood, metal and brick;
  • very open, but well-defined areas;
  • suspended lighting fixtures, with clear lines in the systems;
  • the lack of classic finishes on the brick walls and concrete stairs;
  • the use of neutral colors for furnishing – gray, brown, black, metallic colors, and accents with intense shades;
  • the use of furniture designed in an industrial style, made of specific, heavy materials;
  • impact decorations, which approach the same style.

It must be kept in mind, however, that this type of architecture adapted to the residential space is not for everyone, because the elements that compose it are usually cooler, and stronger in character and presence.
But we can say that while industrial architecture is gaining more and more ground in Romania, it will take some time until we can develop our own specialists who can deal properly with its balanced realization and good taste. It would be best to search carefully and call on architecture and design professionals to get the most accurate guidance.
